Barrel Racer and Instructor

Born in 1938, Martha Josey began her rodeo career in 1964 as a barrel racer, first qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 1968. During her early years on the circuit, she and her gelding, Cebe Reed, captured fifty-two consecutive barrel races and seven horse trailers in one run of victories.

Josey qualified for the NFR numerous times ~ four consecutive years from 1978 to 1981 and last in 1998 ~ making her the only rodeo cowgirl to compete at the National Finals over four decades. She was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1985, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Texas Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1999, she was named the American Quarter Horse Association National Female Equestrian of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation.

In recent years, Martha Josey and her husband, R.E., have combined their devotion to rodeo and fine horses with an extensive training and teaching program. through various clinics specializing in horsemanship, barrel racing, and calf roping at their Marshall, Texas, ranch.
