Out of the Vault: Rex Linn’s Cup Under Glass

Posted on October 7, 2021 by Michael Grauer in ,

The last time we held the Western Heritage Awards in 2019, I, Michael Grauer, McCasland Chair of Cowboy Culture/Curator of Cowboy Collections and Western Art, had the opportunity to give a vault tour to Grainger Hines and Rex Linn. On the Sunday after the WHA supper, I was asked to give a museum-wide tour for Kevin Costner and his people. Rex Linn tagged along, but he brought a cup of coffee in a Styrofoam cup with him. When we got to the galleries I told Mr. Linn he couldn’t bring the coffee into the galleries.

He started grumbling and grousing about “some day I hope to be famous enough where someone would take this coffee cup and put it in a museum under a glass top.

After the tour I asked Mr. Linn to sign the coffee cup and have had the cup in my office for over two years.

This “artifact” provided the perfect opportunity to “museumize” his experience from 2019 and pay it forward to 2021.

Thank you, Rex, for an amazing job hosting the 60th Annual Western Heritage Awards honoring Robert Duvall and George Strait. I just hope Reba knows what a big deal you are now with your cup under glass.
