Clifford Peter Hansen (1912–2009) was a prominent American politician from Wyoming, known for his service as the 26th Governor of Wyoming and later as a U.S. Senator. Born in Zenith, a small rural community in Teton County, Hansen was raised in a ranching family and developed a deep connection to the land. He earned a degree in animal science from the University of Wyoming in 1934, where he also became active in public service, eventually serving on the university’s board of trustees for 20 years.
Hansen entered politics as a county commissioner in Teton County and later served as president of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. He was elected Governor of Wyoming in 1962, bringing his practical experience as a rancher to political office. As governor, he increased funding for mental health and alcoholism programs.
In 1967, Hansen transitioned to the U.S. Senate, where he represented Wyoming for two terms. He was known for his conservative stance on social and fiscal issues, voting against the Equal Rights Amendment but in favor of civil rights legislation. One of his key achievements was securing a higher share of mineral royalties for Wyoming, significantly benefiting the state’s economy.
Hansen retired from politics in 1978 and returned to his home in Jackson. He lived to be 97, remembered for his integrity, humility, and contributions to Wyoming. His legacy includes a long-lasting impact on the state’s ranching industry and public service.
