Rodeo Livestock Contractor

Jenus Clarence “Doc” Sorensen, one of the northwest’s greatest livestock contractors, was born in 1893. College educated, he went to school on a football scholarship and obtained a veterinary medicine degree from Colorado A&M. Sorensen broke into rodeo in the late 1920s and partnered with Everett Colborn in livestock contracting during the 1930s.

After ending his association with Colborn, Doc Sorensen established the Flying U Rodeo Company. The firm produced rodeos at Cheyenne five times and at Las Vegas for 19 years, in addition to many other venues on the Northwest circuit. Flying U Rodeo was known for its fast-paced, spectacular shows, including a 12-horse grand entry cavalcade and all-white broncs for the bucking contests.

Flying U Rodeo’s bucking horses bent the backs of the best cowboys. The string included the notorious broncs Inflammation, Penicillin, Nicotine, and Star Dust. Sorensen ran the company until he sold it and retired in the 1960s. Doc Sorensen died in 1985.
