Bull Rider
Born at Clarksville, Texas, in 1914, “Cowboy Jim” Whiteman decided to rodeo after hearing the tales told by his older brother, Hub. He first competed in 1933 in bull riding at Bonham, Texas.
Jim Whiteman worked Wild West Shows for several years before turning pro in the 1930s. His biggest years were 1937 to 1946. In 1943 he won the bulldogging at Houston, and in 1948 at Little Rock he threw a steer in a near-record 2.8 seconds. Whiteman worked rodeos in the Arkansas-Oklahoma-Louisiana-Texas circuit and also regularly competed at New York and Boston.
After his competitive career ended, Jim Whiteman judged rodeos and then worked for 15 years in law enforcement. He died in 1978 at Clarksville.
