Inducted in 2005
Karl Malden
Malden (1912-2009) was one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, known for his wide range and ability to convey complex emotions. Though not primarily associated with Westerns, Malden made several significant contributions to the genre, bringing a depth and seriousness to his roles that elevated the material. One of his most notable Western performances was in One-Eyed Jacks (1961), directed by Marlon Brando. In the film, Malden plays the role of Dad Longworth, a morally ambiguous figure who betrays Brando’s character. His nuanced portrayal of a flawed, human character set him apart from the more stereotypical Western villains of the time.
Malden also appeared in the Western epic How the West Was Won (1962), where he played Zebulon Prescott, the patriarch of a pioneering family. The film, an ensemble piece with an all-star cast, showcased Malden’s ability to bring warmth and gravity to his characters, qualities that helped define his career. While Westerns were only a portion of his work, Malden’s performances within the genre contributed to his reputation as a consummate actor, capable of elevating any project he was a part of, whether it was a Western or a contemporary drama.
