Excitement is in the air at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum as we prepare for the 50th annual Prix de West Invitational Art Exhibition & Sale. The exhibition opens June 2, 2022, with the sale weekend set to take place June 17–18. But you don’t have to wait to view the amazing art. The online catalog is now LIVE.
Prix de West showcases the American West through the work of today’s finest contemporary Western artists. In celebration of the 50th Prix de West, we will be spotlighting artists, discovering works currently resting in the Museum vault and sharing the history of this prestigious exhibition and sale.
Our next Prix de West artist in the spotlight is Terri Kelly Moyers. Moyers’ passion for painting has been lifelong. Early in her career, she learned from established artists and from nature itself. As an avid plein air artist, she draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the American West and especially enjoys painting women for their large, but often underreported, roles in history. Moyers has been a long-time Prix de West artist and will be returning to the exhibition & sale for her 31st year this June. What keeps this oil painter coming back each year with a new depiction of the American West? For Moyers, it may be the draw of the show itself.
La Luz de Fe – 2012 Prix de West Purchase Award Winner
The following interview is an excerpt from “What Makes Prix de West the Premier Western Fine Art Show in the Country?” written by Prix de West Committee Chairman Dan Corazzi for the 50th Prix de West commemorative catalog.
What did receiving the Prix de West Purchase Award for La Luz de Fe, in 2012, mean to you both personally and professionally?
When the award was announced it was such a complete surprise, it took a while to sink in. For me personally, it was validation. It helped me realize that maybe I do belong here, in this amazing show which is the premier Western art event. Professionally, hopefully, it allowed others to feel the same way about my work.
Mission Belle – Oil on Gessoboard, 24″ x 16″ – coming to Prix de West 2022
After being in the Prix de West for over 30 years, what are the main reasons why you continue participating?
Being at the Prix de West is such an important part of my life as an artist. It is always an honor to do work that will hang in such an important museum for the run of the show. It allows us to create major pieces that will be viewed by a great deal of people – collectors, museum visitors, students of art, etc.
