Sharon Camarillo

California

Born in 1948 and raised in suburban California, Sharon Meffan Camarillo turned a horse-riding hobby into a stellar rodeo career. Trying her hand at barrel racing as a teenager, she watched the first National Rodeo Finals Rodeo held in Los Angeles and decided to compete.

 

Sharon Meffan became a college rodeo star in barrel racing and goat roping. She won the regional intercollegiate championship and captured a rodeo scholarship to California Polytechnic Institute famed for its rodeo team. Attaining a degree in business administration, she turned to professional rodeo. A four-time National Final’s Rodeo qualifier in women’s professional barrel racing, she married champion cowboy Leo Camarillo in 1974.

 

Based in Chico, California, Sharon Camarillo now operates her own business, Rafter C Productions. She specializes in designing equipment and producing clinics, books, and videos on barrel racing. For her wide-ranging contributions to rodeo, Sharon Camarillo received the Tad Lucas Memorial Award in 1997.
