Earl Harrison Monahan was a life-long resident of the Sandhills of Nebraska. He was born in 1899 in Hyannis, Nebraska and became one of the most noted cattlemen in his state.

With his son Jim and two grandsons, Bryan and Bob, Monahan operated the Monahan Cattle Company out of the Circle Dot Ranch. The ranch covered parts of Grant, Hooker and Cherry Counties and specialized in purebred and commercial Herefords.

He was a charter member of the Sandhills Cattle Association, a member and past president of the Nebraska Stockgrowers Association, a member and past president of the American Hereford Association and a member of the National Cattlemen’s Association.

In 1987, Monahan co-wrote “Sand Hills Horizons” with his friend Bob Howard. The book told the story of the Circle Dot Ranch and other histories of the Sandhills.
